Agnico-Eagle’s Kittila mine is one of the largest known gold deposits in Europe, with reserves containing 5.2 million ounces and employing about 386 people. The mine is located in the Lapland region of northern Finland, approximately 900 kilometres north of Helsinki and 150 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. The region includes an international airport and a popular ski resort. The Kittila mine consists of a series of open pit surface deposits along with a deeper ore body that is being mined from underground. The 3,000-tonne-per-day operation is expected to produce on average about 150,000 ounces of gold annually throughout the life of the mine estimated to be through to 2044 at current rates.
